Winter style: warm up without bulking up

No matter where you live, January and February typically usher in the year's coldest temperatures. So how's a fashionista to protect herself from hypothermia while deftly avoiding that "Nanuk of the North" look? With some savvy styling tips from our friends at iVillage Beauty and Style, of course.

  • A classic trench will provide the warmth you need without adding bulk; plus, a good one like this one from Banana Republic will last you several seasons.
  • Give beige a break and consider a pop of color in your outerwear, which is now available in the season's hottest shades.
  • Or choose a bold print, like this black-and-white plaid from Macy's.
  • Or opt for a unique styling choice, like this asymmetrical coat from Soia & Kyo.
So go ahead: keep your style and keep warm. With today's fabulous outerwear styles, there's no need to choose!

Beauty tip: sun-kissed winter makeup

Just because the weather outside is gray and ashen doesn't mean your skin has to follow suit. A touch of warm-hued makeup can give you a youthful, sun-kissed look ... and the right application technique can mean the difference between "I just holidayed in St. Bart's" and "I just fell into a vat of orange Jell-o."

Allure has teamed up with celebrity makeup artist Hung Vanngo to give you a step-by-step video on creating a subtle look that will have you glowing all winter long.

A few tips to keep in mind:

  • Make sure skin is clean and well-moisturized before you reach for makeup; this will ensure that everything goes on smoothly.
  • To apply powder bronzer, swirl a fluffy brush in the bronzer, tap to remove any excess, then sweep across the forehead, down the bridge of the nose, and along the cheekbones—right where the sun would touch your face.
  • Use a rosy-pink blush instead of anything peachy, which could look fakey on top of the bronzer.
  • Using your fingertips, pad a warm, champagne-colored highlighter along the tops of your cheekbones.
  • Keep the rest of your makeup subtle.

Ready for a long winter's Nap?

Between holiday parties, shopping, travel plans, and other end-of-the-year madness, sometimes a girl's just gotta treat herself to a nice, cozy Nap.

Why we love it...

This season, Nap, one of our favorite loungewear design houses, really earns its stripes with this ultra-soft, crazy-comfortable Striped French Terry Robe. It features horizontal stripes in grey (pictured) or green, silver cross-stitching, and a matching waist tie, topped off with a sassy little hood.

Why you want it...

It's just the thing for catching some well-deserved downtime while you snuggle up against the winter chill. Made of body-loving French terry, it's also machine washable.

What it can go with...

This wintertime treat also coordinates beautifully with some of your other Nap favorites. In grey, it goes perfectly with the coordinating long-sleeve jumper and slippers, while the green version pairs beautifully with the matching cropped-sleeve shirt and boyshort.

Pick one up for yourself or for someone on your holiday gift list who could use a good Nap. Or both!
